Bilton Ajax |
Back to action after a 6 week break for Christmas and the bad weather and what a return it was !! Quarterfinal of the Cup and against Division 1 side, Bilton Ajax. The game started well with an early goal from Roger, charging through midfield and scoring from a tight angle 1-0. The game settled into a midfield battle after that, with honours even – Jason having a couple of chances which were well saved by the Bilton goalie. Wanderers then started to dominate with the defensive pairing of Dan and Matt snuffing out any Bilton attacks. Roger had a good long range effort saved well and James began to start his runs down the left – looking for the pass inside all the time which was great to see. After 14 minutes Roger won the ball in midfield and put James through with an excellent pass – coolly finished by James into the bottom right-hand corner 2-0. A triple substitution was then made with Daniel, Will and Ben coming on. Almost immediately Bilton had a corner which wasn’t cleared by the Wanderers, it came back out to the corner taker and a long range effort along the ground surprised Joe in goal and found its way into the net – game on 2-1. Then in the next 5 minutes, James made the game relatively save – 2 identical goals inside a minute both down the left, both saved by the goalie first time and followed up by James into the back of the net for his hatrick and 4-1. Bilton didn’t let their heads drop and almost immediately Joe had to produce a fine save to stop them scoring at the other end. Roger was then injured on the thigh and had to come off after a sterling first 20minutes, Will took his place in the holding role and after a few minutes adjusting to the position played a good solid game, keeping his position. Zac was now finding his feet and caused problems for the defence with a great run and cross and then just after, a shot which was well saved by the goalie – surely his first goal would come today. Halftime 4-1 The second half proved to be one of the best Wanders have ever played and despite a first minute close shave at the Wanderers end, totally dominated by them. After a Wanderers corner James had a speculative shot which deceived the goalie and trickled in to make it 5-1. Daniel playing in the unfamiliar forward role then started to realise he wasn’t on his normal right wing and began to play well with 2 decent efforts both saved by the goalie. Then came the goal of the match , on the halfway line, Zac fed the ball to James who passed to Daniel and with a neat 1:2, James was in on goal and made no mistake- cracking football and James 5th goal of the game. 6-1 Immediately from kick off Bilton attacked and Dan produce a superb tackle to keep them out. Ben and Dan as solid as ever in defence. Zac had a good run on the right and crossed for James to score his double hatrick 7-1– very well done – so good that he was immediately substituted!! Coach then switched the positions around with Will volunteering to go in goal to give Joe a run out. Joe immediately put some crunching defending tackles in. At the other end, Jason was back on and produced a great corner which Zac chested but good not direct into the goal. From the halfway line Jason then had a strong run, beating 2 defenders and unleashing an excellent shot which buried itself in the net 8-1. Two minutes later one of those great moments came, Zac played a lovely 1:2 with Daniel and finished well to score his first league goal – you could see what this meant to him – on his birthday as well 9-1. Matt was now on the left wing in an unfamiliar position but was doing really well combining with Jason in the centre – Matt put Daniel through but the angle was too tight to score. Bilton then had a good 5 minutes – full credit to them, still smiling with their heads up, great to see – Ben defending well and Will doing everything asked of him in the goal. Joe was now on the right wing in his favoured attacking role, after a good run he shot from the angle and the ball hit the corner of the bar / post and dropped just short of the line. Everyone seemed to stop for a second until Daniel realised this was his chance and smashed the ball across the line for his first league goal (Dad ran the length of the pitch and the moths flew from his wallet!!). 10-1. With that milestone out of the way, the pressure was lifted and he immediately had another good attempt which was well saved by the goalie. Ben was then swapped with Daniel to see if he could score his first, but it was Matt who was to crown the game off, a lovely run which produced a goods save but an even better follow up to score 11-1. Unfortunately time ran out for Ben and he will have to wait for another day. The final whistle blew with 11-1 the final score and now only 1 match away from Wembley. A superb performance by the whole team, so a team MOM award to them all. Whilst goals dominated, we mustn’t forget the excellent role of the defenders / goalkeepers – Dan, Ben, Matt , Joe and Will, the forgotten heros without whom the forwards couldn’t do their job. And credit to Bilton - a lovely bunch of lads. Back to league action next week and a new report writer for 2 weeks due to holiday. Come on the Wanderers!!!
