6/2/2010 League Cup Wellesbourne U10s 0 v 3 Alveston

This was an exciting day for Wellesbourne Wanderers U10’s, with an expectant crowd gathered for the eagerly awaited cup semi final with Alveston, who we had both beaten and drawn with earlier in the season. Conditions were wet, cold and grey, but at least it wasn’t raining, or for that matter, snowing!

Alveston had all the early pressure, and brought some fine saves from Alan. This nevertheless gave Tom and Marcus plenty of opportunity to show their defensive qualities. WW began to get into the game, and both Henry and Edward brought good saves from the Alveston goalie. Unfortunately just as WW were settling, Alveston picked up the ball in the final third, kept their nerve with some neat passing and slotted the first goal. WW had only just restarted when another good piece of football gave Alveston a 2 – 0 advantage. Vaughan, Ollie and James all worked hard to get another chance for Henry, but the Alveston keeper saved well again.

Half time arrived and time to regroup. WW rallied well in the second half, considering the daunting challenge they had to get back on level terms. Both Henry and Edward continued to test the Alveston goalie, with Edward flashing another cross from the bye line across the face of the Alveston goal, but no-one could quite stick their toe on it! Finally, Alveston settled the rubber with a 3rd goal.

Even though the end result was a 3 – 0 defeat, all the boys in the squad can feel proud of their achievement in reaching the last four.
