Under 14's

1st game of season away at Tysoe and, as in previous years, the weather is not great. No rain but a gale blowing across the pitch. Admittedly not quite Irma but strong enough to disrupt play.

We kick off down hill and with some assistance from the wind – play takes place down the left of the pitch almost in it’s entirety. 3 at the back and 2 wing backs allows us to be positive on the ball and we dominate possession. We create a number of half opportunities but struggle a little with through balls carrying through to the keeper. Miles, Josh and Ollie all create but their keeper does not have to work as hard as we would we like.

Tysoe play on the break trying to put the ball in behind and chase it down and their first goal comes from this. Billy makes an excellent and brave save to prevent a repeat and we reach half time 1-0 down.

2nd half and Tysoe know how to work the conditions with Billy having to do lots of sweeping up. Unfortunately, they extend their lead from a corner as the ball bounces in the 6 yard box and go 3 up from a through ball. However, Wellesbourne are playing really well with some excellent passing and pressing in midfield. George is having a great game and Mark’s link play is very pleasing on the eye. His skill on the ball leads to a foul 10 yards out from the area. He takes it himself and scores a beauty, completely deceiving the keeper and putting it in at the near post to make it 3-1.

It is a good, even battle with Callum a tiger in midfield and Mal tearing down the wing. Alas a momentary lapse in concentration and we are too slow to close down we a cross which takes a lucky deflection and rolls in off the far post. Down the other end, the luck is not with us – a fantastic cross ricochets off a defender and flashes the wrong side of the post and a great move allows Arun to get a shot away but it glances off a defender and again is narrowly wide. The boys finish strongly but cannot get another goal back so it ends up 4-1.

Really pleased with performance from everyone on the pitch. 100% commitment and some attractive football. Just need to close down all the time and a bit more composure on the ball but overall the boys should be very proud of themselves.
