Under 8's v Lillington Junior Colts - Match Report 11/11/2017
Saturday November 11 2017Under 8's
Confidence was sky high after a much needed win away at Khalsa last week. The pitch looked amazing, very professional and with the new respect barriers the team were setup for an exciting game.
Todays visitors were a very good Lillington Junior Colts side who were yet to be beaten this season.
Wellesbourne started the game in a determined mood and the defensive partnership of Zack and Joe were putting in some fine challenges. Sam H (aka De Gea) was in outstanding form again this week with a string of top class saves to keep the game tight but Lillington finally managed to break down the Wanderers defence and scored 2 goals in quick succession. This didn’t deter the boys and Samuel S showed some slick foot skills resulting in a quick turn to start yet another Bourne attack. Lillington added the 3rd before Lewis’ quick thinking and ‘eye for goal’ took a snap shot which rattled in the bottom corner. Players, coaches and parents jumped for joy and we were back in it. We did have to rely on some fine saves from De Gea between the posts and we go in 3 – 1 down at half time.
Second half was similar to the first with lots of hard tackling from the new partnership of Josh and Dylan but Lillington were too strong and a great strike gave the impressive De Gea no chance. Wellesbourne were still fighting on but some lapse in concentration allowed a 3 on 1 at the back and although another great save from Sam H, Lillington poked home the rebound. Ewan and Liam worked tirelessly across the pitch to breakdown the Lillington defence but without success. Dylan excited us again with his close control and impressive change of pace but was again met by a resilient Lillington side. Ewan managed to find himself in some space on the half way line and wound up for a strike which caught the keeper by surprise and smashed into the back of the net. George replaced Josh to bring on some fresh legs and was immediately called into the action with a blocked pass which catches him hard on the shoulder. Lillington however were relentless, back into their stride and Wellesbourne were soon overwhelmed resulting in a deserved 9-2 win for Lillington.
Each week as a group of players we are improving so much and the boys showed massive heart to continue fighting until the final whistle. Tackling was the main theme this week and although Sam H got the main plaudits from parents and apposing manager, Joe’s performance also stood out. He demonstrated great strength, positional awareness and the timing of his tackles was superb.
